My grim compulsion for all things death metal was initially born from a worship of the burgeoning Floridian and Swedish scenes, spawned originally as a continuation of my immortal love of thrash. The new album from New York’s Immolation is a masterclass in death metal songwriting. It pairs a queasy feeling of gloom with melodies you can actually hum along to. Atonement is quintessential Immolation, in that just about everything that can be said about it has already been said about its predecessors. Make no mistake, that’s not to malign the album as an entity, but differentiating it from, say, Majesty and Decay or Kingdom of Conspiracy on a stylistic level is a struggle at best. Although Florida, is generally regarded as the immortal epicentre of American Death Metal (and rightly so, it is the home of Death, Morbid Angel, Obituary and Deicide among many others after all), New York is also right up there in producing so many quality death metal bands from Cannibal Corpse and Suffocation to Demolition Hammer and Mortician. Immolation have been making death metal statements for a long time, and this, their latest manifesto continues to display loud and clear why these guys are a Lyrically dense and musically astounding, ‘Atonement’ is an album that will continue to impress long after the visceral thrill of the white-hot riffing has worn off and it sees Immolation not only cement, but enhance their already impressive legacy. It seems that social upheaval often leads to an upsurge in art and 2017 has been no exception.

It is truly the best of both worlds here.

And yes, Atonement is dark. Very dark, in fact. If the blistering nature of Kingdom Of Conspiracy was the urgent warning of a fast approaching Armageddon, than Atonement is the hallowed day when our fragile world is consumed by a violent eschaton. Indeed, this more eloquent velocity is the real key to Immolation’s success with this album. Atonement is further proof that Immolation is at their best when driven by themes of blasphemy and rejection of religion.

Before you have a chance to infer its purpose, it’s joined by a sonic armada – one that is instantly overwhelming and unceasing in its hostility. It is truly the best of both worlds here.

Immolation manages to approach this sound with a subtlety that allows for quick transitions between tempos that don’t come off as too jarring. The drumming on Atonement has become much more focused than on previous efforts; Steve Shalaty is the band’s longest tenured drummer, and he has really scaled back his urge to hit everything all at once.
